Mr F Bones goes to the Palace

Mr Frederick Richard Bones, 88-years-old veteran of the National Union of Agricultural Workers, of Bounds View, Boughton, attended an investiture at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday to receive the M.B.E. awarded to him in the New Year's Honours.Mr Bones, who was accompanied by his daughter, Mrs C.E. Jones and granddaughter, Miss Lilian A. Bones, received his award, made for his long service to agricultrual workers, from H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester.

The mighty and the humble mingled at Buckingham Palace when the Duke of Gloucester acting on behalf of the Queen held an Investiture there today. There were re-tabbed generals and other high officers displaying yards of gold braid, and there were also men like Mr Freddy Bones of Boughton Kent, 88, last January, who received the MBE for long service to agricultual workers. Mr Bones started work at the age of nine, earning 3s6d a week for seven days' work, has nine children, 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A Daughter and a granddaughter were in the ballroom with him. Others of his family waited outside.
