Note: A farmer of substance by the name of EDWARD CURLING called magistrates to put a stop to his truanting workers. This was to cause the last battle on English soil, the Battle of Bossenden Wood. The battle was between a contingent of soldiers, who marched from Canterbury, and a small band of labourers from Hernhill, Boughton and Dunkirk. The soldiers had been dispatched to arrest their leader, John Nichols Thom, who called himself Sir William Courtenay. Mad Thom,as he was known, was a wine merchant with a history of mental illness. Eleven men died at Bossenden Wood, nine rioters and two of those sent to apprehend them.
Edward is extensively mentioned in two books, being B Reay's "The Last Uprising of the Agricultural Labourers" and P G Roger's "Battle in Bossenden Wood".
