Allan, William (b. 05 MAR 1839, d. -)
Note: Christened - 24 Mar 1839 - Clackmannan Clackmannanshire
Note: William Allan was the son of William Allan and Jean Fotheringham,{see his marr. cert. I860). At the time of his son William's birth in 1861 he was a merchant seaman, and when his son married in 1882 he was described as a ship's carpenter, deceased. In 1841 William was at Duke St Clackmannan with his parents William, born 1817, and Jean, born 1820. Also in the house were Robert Aitken, 1839, John Allan, born 1841, Catherine Scobie, 1777, James Scobie, 1821, Janet Scobie, 1813 and John Scobie. In 1851 William was a scholar aged 12 living at Duke St Clackmannan with his parents. On 23 Nov 1860 William, 21, married Rebecca Todd, 19, at Clackmannan. On his marriage cert, his parents were named as William Allan, weigher, and Jean Fotherlngham. Rebecca's parents are named as Copland Todd, Skipper, and Mary Fraser. William and Rebecca had 2 children, Jean, 1859, and William, Feb.1861. In 1861 Rebecca and the 2 children were living at 8 Duke St Clackmannan. William was not present, he was Able Seaman on the sloop Britannia ofAlloa, which was captained by his father in law Archibald Copland Todd. The 3rd member of the crew was George McCouat whose grandson William Wright later married William's grandaughter Jane Allan. Did they meet through their grandfathers? William must have died before 1871 and Rebecca remarried, as a Rebecca Sullivan and son William Allan, 10, were living with Peter Sullivan, an Irish labourer, and his children, in Clackmannan. Jean/Jane was not there. I cannot find a record of William's death, possibly he died at sea. In 1881 Rebecca, 37, and Peter, 42, labourer, were still living in Duke St Clackmannan with his children. In 1891 Rebecca and Peter, labourer, were still living in Duke St Clackmannan. With them were Alexander, 26, a coalminer, and grandson William Malcolm, 9, a scholar. Rebecca died at noon on 20 October 1896 at Duke St Clackmannan. The cause of death was elephantitis, 2 months, and gastritis, 20 days. Her son Alexander Sullivan of the same address was present at her death.
