Note: Ernest Bones was posted to the Royal Flying Corps as a PT instructor. There is a family story that he was also posted to North Africa during this time as a driver. David Rowley recalls Ernest's stories as a child, especially one in which he claimed to have driven Lawrence of Arabia on one occasion. He was also purported to have driven the first caterpillar tracked vehicle on African soil. On returning to England he resumed his job as a long distance lorry driver but returned to service in World War II as captain in the home guard.
